The Abduction of Jameel Behram and Pakistan's Crackdown on Pro-Palestine Voices
Nearly three weeks and the family of Jameel Behram have no idea where he is or what crime he has supposedly committed.
It has been 20 days, 9 hours and 55 minutes since pro-Palestine activist Jameel Behram was abducted from his home address in Karachi, Pakistan.
The latest update from this family via X reads
19 days have passed since my brother Jameel Behram was unlawfully abducted from our house , his only crime was to speak for the people of Gaza. We have no idea about his whereabouts and gravely concerned for his safety.
Thats nearly three weeks and the family of Jameel Behram have no idea where he is or what crime he has supposedly committed. An interview with his sisters (in Urdu) can be seen here.
In brief Jameel’s sisters describe how unknown men in pickup trucks visited their family home two times on the night of 2nd October / 3rd October. Initially suggesting they were looking for someone else, at this point Jameel was not at home. The same men accompanied by Pakistan Rangers returned to the family home at approximately 1.00 am on the morning of 3rd October and having spoken to Jameel and confirmed his identity via his ID card they violently abducted him. No reason was given, despite Jameel asking for them to identify themselves they did not.
Jameel’s sisters also make it clear that after the first visit they could have informed Jameel not to return home if he had committed any crime.
Since his abduction the family has been sent from pillar to post attempting to file a First Information Report (FIR) something which is the start of legal proceedings in Pakistan.
Delaying the filing of the FIR is common practice in Pakistan when the police are attempting to hide the illegal behaviour of their own government and its agencies. I use the term ‘illegal’ loosely; Pakistan is largely a lawless place, especially when it comes to the actions of its secret services. Without the FIR Jameel is effectively not in the system.
Jameel’s abduction bears the classic signs of an Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) hit, multiple unknown men along with Pakistani Rangers abducting a Muslim activist from his home and disappearing him into the dark abyss of the secret services.
Looking through Jameel Behram’s social media posts (mainly in Urdu) it is impossible to find anything which hints towards illegality. He was clear in highlighting the duplicitous and treacherous nature of the political and military establishment in Pakistan. Someone calling for a solution for the people of Palestine beyond western sponsored peace plans and ceasefires which are violated within hours.
Jameel has become a victim of Pakistan’s new found centrality on the Gaza issue.
After the success of Operation Bunyan-um-Marsoos against India, Pakistan’s military currency has increased.
Asim Munir was promoted to Field Marshall and became one the very few men to have been lucky (or unlucky) enough to have a private audience with Donald Trump. He repaid the favour by nominating Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, a prize Trump eventually lost.
On the back of the Zionist attack against Qatar, Pakistan’s increased military co-operation with Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states, once again giving its military leadership delusions of grandeur.
Pakistan’s military prowess was on full display against India, whilst in the background a genocide in Gaza was unfolding. As the military generals paraded around like peacocks coming of age, showing off their Chinese arsenal bought at the cost of ignoring China’s own genocide in Xinjiang, many in Pakistan were asking the same question.
What is the point of all this power if we cannot use it to defend the people of Gaza?
This in Pakistan is a crime, as is exposing the twenty point enforced surrender of the Palestinian people, or calling for the Pakistani military to intervene to help liberate the people of Palestine.
These, it seems, were the ‘crimes’ of Jameel Behram asking simple questions on behalf of starving children and butchered people.
This is now the prevalent atmosphere in Pakistan and around the world, Zionism is sacrosanct, beyond question. From the UK where protests are being labelled anti-semitic to the streets of Pakistan where pro-Palestine / anti-government protests organised by Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) against the rumoured normalisation of relations with Israel, were met with overwhelming force.
According to one eye witness he saw approximately 600 dead bodies, the video (in Urdu) on X can be seen here.
An article on Drop Site News made an interesting point
One piece of evidence supports that claim: in a highly unusual move, Pakistan’s military-aligned media aired coverage of the violence, including an interview with a local man who claimed he saw more than 600 dead bodies. Such a claim would never be aired on that network without approval from the military, suggesting the establishment wanted to send a message to the people of Pakistan, without raising an international outcry
If this analysis is true, then the message being sent to the people of Pakistan is simple there is no room for disagreement with government policy.
In Pakistan there is no middle ground, either the military facilitates your protests for their own objectives or they crackdown with violence. Special treatment is reserved for those with Islamic sentiments.
Pakistan has more to lose now than ever if it doesn’t toe the line on the Gaza issue. Shehbaz Sharif’s recent appearance at the Peace 2025 Summit in Egypt, his re-nominating of Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize 2026 and Trump’s praise for Asim Munir shows Pakistan has chosen the US over the people of Gaza.
The political trajectory is now clear, the ‘Gaza Peace Plan’ ignores the genocide, it ignores those who committed war crimes and conveniently it ignores those who remained silent. Whilst outright recognising the Zionist entity as legitimate may be a step too far, Pakistan seems to be shifting towards accepting the Abraham Accords or some version of them. Flash polls on social media show that Pakistani’s don’t want anything to do with normalising relations with the Zionist entity.
Going back to the start of the Gaza genocide in November 2023 , Gallup Pakistan conducted a poll on the Palestine issue and one of its conclusions were
With regards to the ongoing war between Israel and Palestine, an almost unanimous (91%) Pakistanis align their sympathies with the Palestinians of Gaza, while only 2% report sympathizing with Israel.
Pro-Palestine sentiments exist in Pakistan across the whole of society, it is something both the military and government should take note of. Rather than abducting peaceful activists they should be taking steps to ensure they act according to the wishes of their people.
It’s no surprise that Jameel Behram was abducted or other protesters were shot dead, Pakistan now wants to play hard ball with any pro-Palestine sentiments. They don’t want anyone rocking the boat now they have a close relationship with Donald Trump.
The mainstream media in Pakistan (like much of the world) is complicit in the actions of the government and the military. They rarely make any noise about abductions of activists such as Jameel Behram. Either through fear of reprisals or the love of money.
As for Jameel’s family, his sisters, mother, wife and child all they want is for him to be brought before the courts and charged with whatever crime he has supposedly committed. We cannot allow Jameel Behram to simply disappear.
When it comes to protecting the Zionist state, international law, human rights and now Pakistan’s legal system are all thrown away in favour of silencing voices speaking up for the people of Palestine.
